This month Red10 has visited the popular Doncaster Nail & Beauty Salon in Hatfield 'Handgelic Nails' to speak with owner Katie Stimpson about her fantastic business and her journey from trainee to Salon Owner.
Interview with Katy Stimson - Handgelic Nails
What did you do before training to become a Nail Technician?
I worked for a local car dealership for many years until I had my son.
What has been your journey so far?
After training at Red10 I rented a desk in a salon, it was slow to start with but then I got busier and busier. I realised that if I was busy now in the winter months I was going to be very busy in the summer. I couldn't expand and take on anymore staff where I was so I had to move into bigger premises. In July 2014 I opened Handgelic Nails with one member of staff Emma. Emma wasn't trained so I sent her on the Acrylic and Gelish Courses at Red10. November 2014 I took on another member of staff Debbie and also sent her to train at Red10. In January 2015 myself and Emma did the Funded NVQ at Red10, it was tough but it really perfected our skills. We have hired three more members of staff since then. I only send my staff to train through Red10.
What made you choose Red10 to do your training?
I'm not sure really, I just liked the feel of the place when I came in. It's not a negative, gossipy place and it's not tolorated at all which is something I myself implement in my own salon.
What inspired you to open a salon so early on in your career?
I'm an ambitious person and 100% committed. Customer Service is very high standard in the industry I came from so this gave me the drive to want to achieve. I was a single mum and recently divorced, I had been bankrupt and had nothing to lose really.
